How to keep your bananas fresh

I love bananas and I hate grocery shopping. Thus, I buy a lot of bananas at once. This can be a problem because then my bananas get brown before I can finish them! So here is some tips on how to keep your bananas fresh for longer.

The simple solution: Cut off the stems of your bananas and store them in the fridge.

When you cut off the stems they don’t ripen as quickly (I don’t know why, I’m going to pretend there is a really cool magical reason rather than scientific) and in the fridge the process is even slower.

If you are going to use your bananas for smoothies, cutting them into slices and storing them in the fridge keeps them fresh for weeks.

    If you use bananas in smoothies a lot, the absolute best thing to do to preserve them is freeze them when they reach the perfect point of ripeness! Frozen bananas make much better smoothies, they turn out thicker & more milkshake-like, and are naturally chilled without having to add ice or put the smoothie in the fridge (smoothies often turn out slightly warm if you don’t do something to cool them down, as the process of blending creates heat from the friction). I have started freezing many different types of fruit for smoothies as it means I can prevent them going over-ripe and have a handy stash of frozen fruit for blending!

    A tip for people considering storing bananas in the fridge: they should never be refrigerated before they are perfectly ripe as the cold interferes with the natural ripening process – it doesn’t just slow it down, it also makes them taste & look bad as the cold affects the enzymes that ripen them but not other enzymes that cause browning & changes to flavour & texture. A banana that has been chilled will never ripen properly even when removed from the fridge – something I occasionally see in the winter when bananas have been exposed to the cold in transit.
