This February will be Chris and I’s seven year dating anniversary. Seven years! It feels like I have known him so much longer then that.
Here is our story. At least from my perspective. It’s funny how different people remember the same story differently.
My best friend Marie and I were going to set each other up on blind dates so that we could meet new people (we were both 15 years old at the time). We both happened to pick people from our respective Spanish classes (we went to different schools). To keep things short, the boy I set her up with didn’t work out and Chris couldn’t make it because he had band practice (he was in a rock group at the time). So, Chris and I exchanged AIM screen names and started chatting online. He seemed like a really nice person and he thought the same for me, so he invited us to his 18th Birthday party. It was actually on Thursday, February 18th, a teacher planning day so we didn’t have school (it’s funny the little details you remember).
When we got to the party and I met Chris for the first time, he hugged me and introduced himself. My first impression was that he gave good hugs but also of embarrassment because he asked me if I was smelling him! I really just had a stuffy nose but at the time I was really embarrassed.
After the blood left my face, we chatted a lot with my friend Marie. I thought he was really confident (but not too much so) and he kept making me laugh. It was a great party, I even jumped in the pool (really stupid of me since it was freezing). We ended up kissing (even though he hadn’t asked me out yet, I was young and impressionable!) and he asked me out to the movies the next day to see Constantine.
The next day I arrived to the theater and Chris wasn’t there. I called him, trying to act like I didn’t care that I was alone, and Chris said “Oh! You are there already?! I’m at band practice, I’ll get there when I can” or something to that effect. So, to entertain myself I people watched and called my friend Enrique. We ended up chatting for over an hour and Chris still hadn’t arrived. When Chris got there he was actually three hours late! I didn’t tell him until months later how late he was and he apologized profusely (he was so nice, I didn’t want to embarrass him at the time).
Since he didn’t have a car, Chris came with his friend Brian and two other girls (that I can’t recall right now). After the movie has asked me to be his girlfriend and we hung out at a nearby park. We talked about everything from the stars to our favorite TV shows while his friends played hide and seek.
The rest is history. We saw each other on Saturday and Sunday as well. The first week we dated we talked on the phone everyday for over four hours at a time (we both got in a lot of trouble with our parents over the cellular bill that month).
My whole life changed when I met Chris on February 18th, 2005. I realize now how lucky we were to find each other. It is silly to agree to be the girlfriend of someone you just met… but I am so glad I did.
