Barriers to Motivation

What's stopping you?

Last week I went to a motivation workshop at my university. I’m always looking for ways to keep myself motivated and on track to following my dreams. The workshop ended up talking mostly about SMART goals (which you know I love and follow) so it was nice to have a refresher.

One thing mentioned in the workshop that I really felt the need to share, was a list of possible barriers to motivation. Since I read this list the first time, whenever I would feel very “blah” and un-centered, I would think back onto the list and try and determine my barrier.

Here are some possible motivation barriers:

  1. Overwhelmed/Too much work
  2. Unclear career goals
  3. Peer pressure
  4. Homesickness
  5. Personal or family issues
  6. Stress
  7. Financial stress
  8. Overly involved (giving yourself too many responsibilities)

These barriers are aimed at students but they can be applied to non-students as well with a few tweaks. Last week I was in a stupor and realized my barrier was being overwhelmed. I needed to give myself a little break. So, I took the day off. Now today I feel much more rejuvenated and ready to start over.
